Through Michigan's Garden for Growth Program,
communities and individuals can lease vacant lots
to garden and cultivate for $50 a year.
Gennessee County (MI) Land Bank
The Land Bank’s Clean and Green program
supports innovative community-based efforts to
convert vacant properties into neighborhood assets.

Portland's Community Garden program has

New York, NY
Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project has
removed over 875 tons of garbage and reclaimed
more than 400 acres of under-resourced
and rundown parkland. It has grown by
partnering with communities, and
persuading foundations, retailers and financial
corporations to help improve neighborhoods.
Since 1973 Green Guerillas has helped thousands
of people realize their dreams of turning vacant
rubble-strewn lots into vibrant community gardens.
The Bed-Stuy Farm, once a neighborhood garbage
dump on an abandoned lot behind the Brooklyn
Rescue Mission, has been transformed into an
urban oasis that has served several hundred
people since its creation in 2005.

Capital District Community Garden oversees 48
organic gardens where vacant lots existed.
Englewood, IL
Save Our Urban Land, a reclama-
tion project administered by the
University of Illinois Extension and
funded by a grant from the Illinois
EPA has reclaimed vacant lots laden with garbage,
junked cars and other trash.
Long Beach, CA
Long Beach Organic started as the vacant lot task
force, identifying vacant lots and turning them into
community garden spaces. The oldest community
garden, the Signal Garden Site was originally a
polluted brownfield on 16 city lots.
Youth Garden Grants,sponsored by the Home
Depot, are awarded to schools and community
organizations with child-centered garden programs.
America the Beautiful provides grants of seed
packets.
Gardenburger has launched a Community Garden
